Advantages and Disadvantages of an App-based Approach to Education

Education is changing. Twenty years ago, education was mainly based on textbooks. Today, students are using iPads and apps. It's becoming more and more popular to use apps.

I want to say a few words about the app-based approach to education, and how it can be a good or bad thing. The idea of using mobile applications for education is quite new, and I have started to see apps that are being used in the classroom. I can only speak for myself and what I've seen, but I think the app-based approach to education has its benefits and weaknesses.

Education can be made more fun when using apps, and students will be more engaged. They are able to learn more efficiently. Students can learn more by using apps because they are able to learn with no distractions. For example, if there is a web link in a book, it may take a while for the student to go to the link and come back to the page. In the app, you can just tap on the hyperlink and move on to the needed book.

The app-based approach to education can be used in different ways, for example, as a stand alone tool or part of a course, as a whole course or part of a course, or as a substitute for a textbook.

Students are able to learn and study independently with the help of apps. This helps students to develop independent learning skills. Students can access information whenever and wherever they want. This gives students a lot of freedom and flexibility. App-based learning is very interactive, and students won't be able to get bored.

Among the disadvantages, the chief one is the risk that the student's motivation could be reduced by the fact that studying becomes easier.   This is why it is important to understand that such an approach is suitable only for the students who are already motivated to study: those who take an active part in their own education, have their own goals, and actively participate in their own development.

There are many advantages and some disadvantages of an app-based approach to education, as summarized in the following list.

  • They are generally less expensive than other educational materials.
  • Applications are user-friendly, as they are mostly user-friendly.
